Brand game with over 200 parts, introduction to written arithmetic with Montessori material

made of wood, in storage box

The branding game is used as a link between the tangible mathematical material (e.g. the pearl material) and the abstract arithmetic on paper. It represents the ideal connection between the written number and the tangible size of the other mathematical materials. For

example, with an addition, the child writes a four-digit number on a piece of paper and later displays the corresponding marks. It then writes another number underneath. The associated brands are then also displayed here. The brands are then pushed together according to their value (1000s to 1000s, etc.). The child now adds up the tokens, taking into account the swap (10-point transition). The result of the addition is also written on the sheet.

Application, advantages, areas of application for this Montessori material:

    • Learn and train additions

    • Practice and understand subtractions

    • Perform the written multiplication

    • Montessori material for children from 6 years

    • Learning the written division

Scope of the Montessori material:
1 storage box with lid, wood, approx. 29 x 18 x 4 cm
20 1000 stamps, wood, approx. 3 x 2.5 cm
50 100 stamps, wood, approx. 3 x 2.5 cm
50 10 stamps, wood, approx. 3 x 2.5 cm
50 1 stamps, wood, approx. 3 x 2.5 cm
15 chips, wood, approx. 2.5 cm
30 cones, wood, approx. 2 x 1 cm

Instructions for addition with the Montessori token game

It is very helpful if the golden pearl material can be added.
If this material is not available, the introductory exercise is omitted and you can start arithmetic immediately.

Introductory exercise to clarify:
An adult puts a thousand cube, a hundred plate, a ten stick and a single pearl from left to right on the table. Underneath, he places the associated brands 1000, 100, 10 and one. This makes the value of the individual brands visible to the child.

The adult writes a four-digit number on a sheet of paper in the colors of the respective stamps, e.g.
3475 (3 green for the thousands, 4 red for the hundreds, 7 blue for the tens and 5 green for the ones).
Now he lays out the corresponding stamps from left to right: 3 thousand stamps, 4 hundreds stamps, 7 tens stamps and 5 single stamps.
The adult now writes another four-digit number on the paper so that all 1000s, 100s,
10s and one are exactly below each other. A + is placed in front of the lower number. Now a line is drawn under both numbers.

The tiles are also laid out for the second number.
Now we count both numbers together. The tiles of the lower number are pushed upwards from the ones to the tiles of the upper number.
From the ones tokens, all tiles are now counted, e.g. 3475 plus 2154, now we have
5 + 4 = 9. Nine ones marks - a green nine is written in the right place on the paper.
7 + 5 = 12 At every ten transition, there is an exchange, ie ten blue tens tokens are exchanged for a red hundreds token. Two blue tens marks remain. A blue two is written in the tens place under the bill. 1 + 4 = 5 plus the hundred mark for the exchanged tens are 6. A red six is written down. 2 + 3 = 5. A green 5 is written down. The result can now be read 5629.

However, this number must be smaller than the first!
A - is placed in front of the lower number. Now a line is drawn under both numbers.
The calculation is, for example, 3475 - 2186.
Now we calculate 3475 minus 2186. We take 2186 away from 3475.
3475
- 2186
------------------

Six is greater than five. We can't take away six out of five. We have to exchange a ten for ten ones. This means that one of the 7 tens tokens is taken away and exchanged for ten one tokens. Now six are deducted. What remains are 6 tens and 9 units.
Eight is greater than six. We can't take away eight out of six. We need more tens. We have to trade a hundred tokens. Now let's take eight away. There are 3 hundreds and 8 tens left.
3 minus 1 is 2 There are 2 hundreds left. 3 minus 2 is 1 One thousand remains.
The result is now noted = 1289.

Instructions for multiplication with the Montessori brand game

The adult writes down any three-digit number. Any multiplier can now be selected, but it should remain single-digit!
234 x 6 This is noted on the piece of paper as follows:

2 (red) 3 (blue) 4 (green) x 6

We calculate 234 TIMES six
The selected number, i.e. 234, is placed six times under each other in marks.

Now, as with the addition, all the tiles are pushed together. Starting with the one; if there are more than ten brands of one color, ten of them are exchanged for one of the next larger brands.

The remaining tokens are counted and the number is written down from right to left.

The result is 1404. 234 times 6 is 1404
