The number cards are used to lay out numbers and arithmetic problems. They help you to visualize and internalize the values ​​of ones, tens, hundreds and thousands.

Getting to know the place values
The three-stage lesson is carried out with the digits 1, 10, 100 and 1000.
The number cards with the above numbers are laid out.

1st level: That is ...
The adult points to the numbers and names them.

2nd level: Show me ...
You will be asked for certain numbers: Show me the 100 - where is the 1?

3rd level: what is it?
The adult points to a number and asks, for example, What is it? - What is this number called?


All number cards are laid out and named.
It starts with the 1 (one).
This is followed by the 2 (two) and all the remaining numbers up to the 9.
The number card with the 10 is placed to the left of the 1 and also named.
This is followed by 20, 30, etc.
The 100 comes to the left of the 10, and all other hundreds below.
The 1000 is placed to the left of the 100, all other thousands below it.

When all the numbers are on display, the step from one to one can be emphasized again.
They are one. There is no zero here. That's the tens. How many zeros are there after the tens? That's the hundreds. How many zeros are there now? That's the thousands. How many zeros do they have?

Variations:
Number cards are removed, which are then put back in the right place by the child. Have

Why are there large and small number cards?
The difference in size of the number cards supports the visual differentiation of small and large numbers when adding or subtracting.

Example addition: 734 + 168 = 902

The summands 734 and 168 are laid out with the small number cards, the sum 902 with the large ones. Two small numbers become one big.

Example subtraction: 800 - 500 = 300

The number 800 is laid out with the large set of cards, the numbers 500 and 300 with the small set of cards.
A smaller number (= smaller than the starting number) is subtracted from a large number and a smaller number (= smaller than the starting number) also remains.
