Smell boxes made of glass, Montessori material to promote the sense of smell

In wooden box

The odour cans encourage and challenge the children's sense of smell. Children learn to describe and name different smells. Two odour boxes are filled with the same odour. For this one uses, for example, spices (clove, nutmeg, anise, ...) or essential oils (vanilla, rose, ...). Self-control by the child is given by coloured dots on the underside of the cans.

Instructions for the Montessori odor cans

Filling the

jars: The set consists of four glass jars with white and four jars with black lids. Every two cans are marked with a dot of the same color on the bottom. Cans with the same colour point are filled with the same content.

Ground spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, clove), other ground or granulated foods (lemon granules, orange granules, coffee), but also cotton wool soaked with essential oils (rose, lavender, eucalyptus, vanilla - ideally non-alcoholic organic oils) are suitable for filling ).

The adult places the cans (black and white separated according to the color of the lids) on the table.

He takes a can with a black lid, opens it and smells it carefully. Then he puts them down in front of him and opens the white cans one after the other, smells them as well and compares the two smells. Once the right odour box has been found, the two are put aside together.

If the smell does not match, a comparison is made with the next can. When all cans are paired, the color markings on the floor are used to compare whether they have been correctly assigned.

After that, the odor cans are mixed and given to the child.

Variations:

- The exercise is performed blindfolded.

- The pairs of cans are separated and placed in different rooms.

- The smell has to be memorized over a longer period of time.
