Instructions for the large multiplication board according to Montessori

Single-

digit multiplier: The multiplication board and the boxes with the pearl sticks or the number tablets are on the table. After a multiplication problem has been chosen, e.g. 4 x 231, the multiplicand (231) is placed first.
For this purpose, the numbers 1 (green - ones), 3 (blue - tens) and 2 (red - hundreds) are taken from the white number cards and placed on the lower edge of the color fields (under the same-coloured field = number 1 under the green, number 3 under the blue field and number 2 under the red field).

The number is now displayed on the colored fields with pearl sticks (green field: a 1-pearl, blue field: a 2-pearl stick, red field: a 3-pearl stick).
The green 4 is taken from the grey number cards and placed in the units position on the right edge of the color field (next to the green field).

The multiplication is carried out starting with the ones:
4 x 1 = 4 (there are now either four 1-pearls or a 4-pearl star on the green field.)
4 x 3 = 12 (there are now 12 pearls on the blue field, e.g. two 6 pearls)
4 x 2 = 8 (there is an 8 pearls on the red field)

In the blue tens field (12 pearls) you have to swap (there must never be more than 9 pearls per color field!).
Ten 10-pearls are exchanged for a hundred: on the field of 10 there is now a 2-pearl st. On the hundred field, a 1 pearl is added through the exchange.

The result can now be read: 924

Multi- digit multiplier:

32 x 124 =
white number cards on the lower edge:
4 (green - under green field), 2 (blue - under blue field) and 1 (red - under red field)

grey number cards on the right edge:
2 green (next to green Field) and 3 (blue - next to blue field)

The multiplication begins with the unit's place of the multiplier with the one of the multiplier:
2 x 4 = 8 (an 8-pearl star is now on the field)
2 x 2 = 4 (4-digit Pearls)
2 x 1 = 2 (2-pearls)

Now the tens place of the multiplier (here: 3) in the second row of the colored fields (starts with the blue tens field) is multiplied:
3 x 4 = 12 (12 pearls, e.g. two 6-pearl beads are on the blue field)
3 x 2 = 6 (there is a 6-pearl stick on the red field)
3 x 1 = 3 (3-pearl stick on the green field)

In the bottom row from right to left:
8 pearls (green field), 4 Pearls (blue F.) and 2 pearls (red F.);

in the row above:
12 beads (blue F.), 6 beads (red) and 3 (green F.)

Then move the beads in the upper row diagonally into the same-colored field in the lower row.

The pearls are now on the fields as follows:

Units field (green): 8 pearls (no exchange necessary)

Tens field (blue): 16 pearls (exchange = for ten 10-pearls a 1-pearl is placed on the hundreds field; remain on the tens field 6 pearls)

Hundred field: 9 pearls

Thousands field (green): 3 pearls

The result can now be read: 3968
