Flat Abacus
Lying calculating frame with golden pearls to prepare for the written multiplication
Made of wood, approx. 28 x 21.5 x 1.5 cm
Large multiplication tasks can be solved in no time with the horizontal arithmetic frame. This material is used to prepare the written multiplication procedure. With the horizontal arithmetic frame, multiplications with single and multi-digit multipliers in the number range up to 1 billion are possible. If you already have the large multiplication board, you can use the number tablets from it.

Scope of the Montessori material:
1 wooden arithmetic frame, approx. 28 x 21.5 x 1.5 cm with plastic beads
Instructions for the horizontal calculation frame
The adult puts the calculator frame and the box with the number tablets on the table in front of him.
The pearls of the computing frame are at the top.
After a multiplication problem has been chosen, e.g. 25 x 1432, the multiplicand (1432) is placed first.
For this purpose, the numbers 2 (green - ones), 3 (blue - tens), 4 (red -
hundreds), 1 (green - thousands) are created from the white number cards on the lower edge of the calculation frame according to the category (ones tokens for units, tens tokens to the tens ...) is placed on the zero there.
The green 5 and blue 2 are taken from the grey number cards and placed on the corresponding colour markings of the categories (from bottom to top: green - ones, blue - tens, red - hundreds and green - thousands). The 5 is therefore on the lower green, the 2 on the blue point above.
The multiplication begins with the two
ones digits (multiplicand and multiplier): 5 x 2 = 10 (10 ones are exchanged for a tens - a pearl of the tens category is pushed down)
5 x 3 = 15 (the tens pearls are pushed down and exchanged for the next category after 10 pieces - so there are 0 ones, 6 tens and 1 hundred)
5 x 4 = 20 (the hundred pearls are pushed down and exchanged for the next category after 10 pieces)
5 x 1 = 5 (the intermediate result is 7160)
The pearls of the intermediate result remain.
All white number plates are shifted one decimal place to the left because now it is multiplied by tens (ones become tens, tens become hundreds, hundreds become thousands ...).
Then the multiplication begins with the tens digit of the multiplier:
2 x 2 = 4 (4 pearls are pushed down - 4 pearls plus the 6 existing pearls result in 10, so they are exchanged for the next category)
2 x 3 = 6 (6 pearls are pushed downwards - 6 plus the 2 already present
result in 8 pearls)
